In Mombasa

When you are in Mombasa we wish to show you around town by visiting Fort Jesus and the old town.

We also offer to organise snorkel and dive excursions where you can enjoy the wonderful underwater world.

In the evening we let you enjoy the coastal cuisine either on board of a traditional Dhow or inside the premises of Fort Jesus.

At 08:00 hrs you depart for a tour of Mombasa city. The city of Mombasa, spread over a small coral island and has a long colourful history.

The tour will go to the mainland to visit the Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society where you will be able to watch the craftsmen at work and bargain over their handicrafts.

You will visit historical places like Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593 to secure their position in Mombasa. The Fort was under siege for more than 33 months before it fell to the Sultan of Oman in 1699.

We will spend some time exploring Fort Jesus Museum and wander through the old town admiring the myriad of shops selling perfumes, embroideries, wood or stone carvings, chests and even Persian rugs.

For thousands of years dhows have plied across the Indian Ocean carrying rare and exotic cargoes of spices and ivory. These romantic old sailing vessels have been largely replaced, but they can still be seen on Mombasa Harbour. You return to the hotel in time for lunch (lunch on own arrangement), afternoon at your own leisure to enjoy.

La Marina Sea Front Restaurant in Mtwapa offers a variety of excursions:

DHOW ADVENTURE

You will picked up from your hotel after breakfast. We will bring you to La Marine where your day begins with a traditional Arab tea at the Makondi wood carvers village. You will then board the Dhows for a leisurely sail out to the snorkeling area. Guests then transfer to smaller reef boats to reach the coral gardens.

A “dry” option of visiting some ancient ruins is available for those not so keen on snorkeling. Lunch is then served at The La Marina Restaurant where an assortment of exotic Kebabs, Chicken Tika, Grilled Indian Ocean Sailfish and spicy salads are prepared.

The afternoon cruise into Mtwapa Creek meanders passed impressive Villas, marina’s, mangrove forests, giant Baobabs and local hilltop villages.

Our entertaining crew teach rope tricks, offer hair braiding, and Kitengi fashion show, then join in with the  bongo drums while the Limbo and acrobatic dancers perform their incredible acts.

At the end of the excursion you will be brought back to your hotel.

CHAMPAGNE CRUISE

After breakfast you will be brought to La Marina. A day of relaxation starts with boarding the Dhow for a sail out through the inner coral reef to our secret sandbar Island.

The Island only appears twice a month on low spring tides. Step onto the untouched whitesand to a glass of champagne and a snack of fresh oysters.

Swim, snorkel or just laze around in the shallows without any of the hassles of the main coastal beaches. Volleyball and cricket available for the sporty ones.

Depart the Island as the water laps at your ankles for lunch at La Marina Restaurant.

The famous Seafood Meze is a continuous selection of the oceans finest morsels, cooked in a variety of exotic spices and sauces, served on your table at your leisure, alongside a Greek salad.

As the afternoon drifts away, the Dhow then sets sail again for the mangrove forests of Mtwapa Creek.

Catch the sun going down over Africa to complete a full yet relaxing day in Kenya. We will bring you back to your respective hotel.

An Arab Sailing Dhow is a great way to experience the Sun going down over Africa, while sipping on a chilled Gin & Tonic.

The calm waterways of Mtwapa Creek are lined with luxury Villas, mangrove forests, giant Baobabs and local hilltop villages.

The scent of charcoal fires sets the scene as the rhythm of bongo drums lead on the limbo and acrobatic dancers in a display of spectacular stunts.

Arrive back at La Marina Restaurant in darkness except for the flaming torches of our Masai warriors who line the shore chanting their welcome ritual.
